The One-Run Epic: How Gujarat Titans Snatched Victory from Delhi’s Grasp

The frenetic pace of the IPL ensures that many games are remembered only for a day or two before fading into oblivion. But then there are those few games that stand out, such as the 14th match of the 2026 edition of the league, which was played in a spectacularly high-scoring encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium and concluded in an equally spectacular manner.

Part 1: The Titans’ Batting Masterclass

As they entered the battle in response to the loss of the coin toss, the Gujarat Titans needed a spectacular display of batting prowess to turn around their dismal season start. And they received just that from their opening batsmen. Jos Buttler (52 runs off 27 balls) and Shubman Gill (70 runs off 45 balls) established an incredibly quick tempo of play against the Delhi bowling attack in the powerplays, with Buttler being especially aggressive against Axar Patel.

As Gill steadied the ship in the middle overs with his typical elegance and composure, it was Washington Sundar who delivered a late burst of energy. In the role of a finisher, he scored his maiden IPL fifty (55 runs off 32 balls), showing particular fondness for the newly added Vipraj Nigam, who yielded 23 runs off one over. By the time Glenn Phillips closed out the innings with some brilliant strokes, GT had amassed an incredible 210/4, which is the highest total to be chased in the current season.

Part 2: KL Rahul’s Heroic Charge

The goal of scoring 211 looked like a challenging one, but KL Rahul was ready to tackle it. Rahul scored his best innings in the IPL league as he struck an impressive score of 92 not out off 52 balls which contained 11 fours and 4 sixes. Thanks to Pathum Nissanka who scored 41 runs, Rahul made sure that the run rate was kept low while facing fast bowlers such as Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada.

Delhi was already leading the match at 158/4 in the 16th over. Nevertheless, in the sport of cricket, it all comes down to tactical strategies. It turns out that this became one of Gujarat’s most strategic decisions as they brought Rashid Khan on board. The leg-spinner, known as the wizard of the game, gave away just 17 runs in his four overs and picked up three valuable wickets.

Part 3: The Miller-Prasidh Final Over Drama

The climax was achieved during the last two overs. While only needing 36 runs off 12 deliveries, David Miller, who had come back into the field after being momentarily ruled out due to an injury to his finger, unleashed hell. He scored 23 runs off Mohammed Siraj’s 19th over, hitting two big sixes to reduce the requirement to 13 runs off 6 balls.

Prasidh Krishna was tasked with the final over. The drama unfolded as follows:

  • Ball 1: Vipraj Nigam hits a four. (9 needed off 5)
  • Ball 2: Nigam attempts another big hit but is caught by Gill. (9 needed off 4)
  • Ball 3: Kuldeep Yadav takes a single, bringing Miller back on strike. (8 needed off 3)
  • Ball 4: Miller wallops a massive six over long-off. (2 needed off 2)

As success was within touching distance, Miller took an “unexplainable” call, and turned down one off the next-to-last delivery, choosing to put himself under full pressure to end the game. With the last delivery, Prasidh bowled a great slow bouncer. Miller missed the ball by a wide margin. While scrambling for a last chance to draw the game and go into a Super Over, Jos Buttler collected the ball and effected a run out on Kuldeep Yadav.

The Aftermath

Silence descended upon the stadium as Gujarat earned their first points in the competition. While it was a disappointing loss for Delhi after an encouraging beginning to the competition, the controversy surrounding Miller’s declined single could be the only topic that everyone will talk about in the coming days. However, for the Gujarat Titans, it was a “clutch” victory. For daily IPL Updates follow Spin match.
